The New Face OF JCGBOXING.COM

It has come to my attention that JCGBOXING.COM has been fairly unbiased and fair when reporting about the JCG boxing club. Both pro and amateur  fighters are putting their hearts and skills on the line and yet we JCGBOXING.COM never really put what we really feel on our site. This has come to an abrupt end. Form now on the comments stated on the JCG site are going to be our opinions and only our sole opinions.  The fact of the matter is that JCG will now be opinionated in its features and its stories.

Jorge Garcia

This weekend was not the best weekend for two JCG amateurs.  Mike Nevarez and Rene Armijo fought at the Andale Restaurant in west El Paso. Both fighters lost that night. Michael Nevarez  fought a good fight but the other boxer was clearly the winner. Rene Armijo was ROBBED. Rene Armijo fought former foe Abe Han. It was clear that Armijo was out pointing and out hustling Han, in fact Rene Armijo even knocked Han Down in two of the four rounds. Although only one of those knock downs were counted. Go Figure!!!!!

Boxing Profiles of the Southwest: Alex "El Diablo" Becerra

So how does it feel going back to Albuquerque and Fighting on the under card of your favorite fighter?

It Feels good, I was born in Albuquerque. Most of my fights have been there and  plenty of people know me there so it feels like home. I am happy to fight on the undercard of Johnny Tapia. I have always wanted to meet him

I heard that Johnny Tapia was and still is one of your favorite boxing idols growing up ?

I admire him alot, just the way he grew up is like the way that I grew up. The drive that it takes to have to fight every day of your life. He grew up that way and so did I. I hope I can make it just like him.

How have you come along in your training?

We trained more on our Defense, using my jab more. The training is more intense. I feel the only way to get better is to step up in training and my trainers have really been coming through with our routines.

Anything else you would like to mention?

I would like to say thanks to the people of New Mexico for adopting us as one of their own and supporting the JCG Crew. I would also like to thank Leonard and Lenny Fresquez for believing in me. I feel at home in New Mexico. So come see this fight card its going to be a good one. I would also like to invite El Paso to come on up to Albuquerque and watch some good fights.

"March Malice"- March 15, 2003 Fresquez Productions

The March Malice card held at Sky City Casino was an action packed event. The card opened up with David "Finito" Martinez winning a well earned four round decision over Heriberto Velasquez. Both boxers threw their combinations but the edge went to David Martinez who was landing the cleaner shots and showing a good defense. The next fight of the night was Golden Girl Stephanie Jaramillo who also won a four round decision against Angie Poe. Jaramillo blasted out of her corner in the first round with a vicious jab that continued to be trouble throughout the entire fight. Poe had guts but it wasn't enough to get by the Golden Girl. Jaramillo showed her best in the third round by clearly outclassing Poe with constant jabs and hard combinations. The third fight on the card showcased a mixed martial arts special attraction. Carlos Conde KO'ed Anthony Zamora in just 29 seconds of the first round. Conde threw a devastating punch that put Zamora down and out faster than it took Zamora to get to the ring. The semi-main event was JCG Boxing's very own Cesar "El Gallito" Lopez. Lopez wasted no time at all knocking out Sandro Oviedo from Argentina. As the bell for the first round rang, Lopez quickly showed Oviedo who was boss. Landing his shots with speed and power, Cesar demonstrated that Oviedo was no match for Gallito. Several moments into the first round Cesar dropped Oviedo to the canvas giving the Argentinean a quick 8 count . Moments later Lopez landed a thundering uppercut that rattled the crowd at Sky City Casino and dropped Oviedo to the ground giving Cesar a KO win.   In the main event Mad Max Heyman showed why they call him mad max, winning a ten round unanimous decision over Norberto Sandoval of Mexico. Heyman used his speed and power to wear  down the warrior from Durango. The best of the combinations went to Heyman who kept Sandoval in check with his jab and his straight right. Heyman who is now being trained by Eddie Muhammad is definitely improving his skills.

(03/07/2003)

New Opponent named for Gallito

Cesar "El Gallito" Lopez will now be fighting Roberto "Famosito" Gomez.  Gomez has fought with Ivan Calderon, Gabriel Elizondo, and Kenny Maldonado. He is a veteran of over twenty five fights. Lopez was originally scheduled to fight Bengi Garcia of San Diego. Fights will be @ The Sky City Casino in Acoma, New Mexico on March 15, brought to you by Fresquez Productions.

Boxing Profiles of the Southwest- Leonard Fresquez

Leonard Frequez is the matchmaker/promoter for Fresquez Productions Inc. Fresquez Productions is the busiest Promoter in New Mexico and Possibly the southwest. The Father and son team have a stable of boxers in their promotional company ranging From super flyweight Cesar Lopez to super middleweight Max Heyman.

How old were you when you got into the boxing game?
I started boxing at 14 and got into promoting at 18.

What do you dislike and like the most about being a promoter?
I dislike the stress that comes from fighters pulling out and the crooked politics in boxing. I like being able to watch the fights that I make happen and just see our fighters fighting and working towards something.

What are your long term goals as a promoter?
To get into to the HBO/Showtime, pay per view market with fighters that we have produced.

If anything, what would be your advise on an up and coming boxer?
Get a good team behind you and stay away from the crooked people in the business

What is the most important thing you have learned from your experience as a young promoter?
I have learned how to put deals together and how this game works.

Who is the most impressive fighter you have seen fight?
Sugar Ray Leonard in his day, he was my favorite fighter when I was a kid. Up and coming I would have to say Mohammed Abdulaev.

Who would you say are the best fighters out of New Mexico, Juarez, and El Paso?
There is alot of talent in New Mexico but Tapia is still the man out of New Mexico right now, in Juarez I like Kirino Garcia, "Conan" Torrecillas, El Paso Juan Lazcano, Cesar Lopez, Alex Becerra

Being one of the youngest promoters out there, how do you handle the stress that accompanies that job?
I have just learned that getting stressed out and angry gets you nowhere, so I  learned to just try and fix the situation by creating different options.

Fresquez Productions is a family business, do you find that working with family is easier or harder?
It's actually harder because it causes more problems and more fighting with the family than it would if I worked somewhere else.

Who has been your role model in boxing and in life?
I don't have a role model in boxing or in life but my father has taught me alot and I have alot of respect for what he has accomplished and what he stands for.

Boxing Profiles of the Southwest- Adalberto (Al) Garcia

Al Garcia is co-trainer of the JCG Boxing Team. Al Garcia has been a part of the El Paso Boxing scene since 1955. He trains pro fighters and has a 45-11 win loss coaching record with his professional fighters. Al also trains over twelve amateur fighters on his team. Al was inducted into the El Paso Boxing Hall Of Fame in 1993 and continues to be a trainer, manager and role model for his team.

How old were you when you got into boxing?

I was eleven years old in Chihuahua, Mexico. I grew up without a father and was constantly bullied around the neighborhood so I decided I had to learn to defend myself.

Describe how boxing kept you of the streets.

Most of my friends were criminals and were older than me but I was still respected because I had to stay in shape. Living in the toughest neighborhood in Chihuahua, those criminals were my friends. Boxing helped me stay alive by staying on the right path.

How many amateur fights did you have?

I had fifty six fights and only lost six. Since I boxed all my life I fought in every weight division. When I was small I started out as a flyweight and eventually grew into a heavyweight.

Who were your role models in life and in boxing when you were growing up?

Raton Macias was my idol in the lighter weights and rocky Marciano in the heavier weights. I also looked up to my father who was shot to death when I was five, he was an engineer and a teacher. I also looked up to my uncle who raised me until he was also shot to death when I was thirteen. But my biggest role model was my mother; she played mother and father to me and my sister. I learned to be strong from her.

What other places did you box?

I boxed all my life so after I started in Chihuahua I boxed in Mexico City where I attended the University of Mexico (UNAM). Then when I came to the United States, I Volunteered for the draft and boxed for the Army while on active duty in Korea. After I left the Army I boxed in El Paso, Juarez, Las Cruces, Dallas, and Fort Worth. I was trained by great trainers of the area such as Beto Maruffo, Chito Barragan, Rocky Galarza, and the great Sammy Burke.

How did you get involved in the pro game?

Seeing how many fighters were being exploited and seeing that the fight game was non existent in El Paso, I decided to form JCG Boxing with my son Jorge Garcia. We try to help them out by paying for licenses, equipment, blood work, eye exams, and even help our boxers get through school by paying tuitions and so on. I sort of adopt them and push them to achieve their goals. So now that when someone says that that fighter is from El Paso they know we mean business.

What would you say is the number one quality you look for in a boxer?

I ask that all my boxers be sincere. If you are not going to give me 100% don’t waste your time or mine. I have seen boxers with plenty of talent but they just don’t commit themselves 100% to the game. Also there is a saying that I picked up from training at the “Banos Jordan” gym in Mexico City that says, “In this place we won’t miss the fighter who leaves, but the newest fighters are never in the way”.

Who do you think is the best prospects out of El Paso, Juarez, and New Mexico?

In El Paso, there is no doubt about Gallito, Diablo and Conan. They are going places. In New Mexico, Brady, and Martinez, and in Juarez it’s got to be Ponce De Leon.

JCG Boxing wins one and loses one at Sky City

JCG Boxing's Alex Becerra won a unanimous decision against Arizona's Jorge Lopez. The six round fight was held by Fresquez Productions and was held @ the Sky City Casino in Acoma, New Mexico. Becerra improves his record to 13-2. Bernardo Guereca lost a very close fight the Albuquerque's Vernon Payne. The doctor stopped the fight on a small cut. The cut was no more than half an inch in length. New Mexico boxing official Henrietta Leos apologized to the JCG Boxing camp for the doctors decision. Leos stated that she thought the fight shouldn't have been stopped but she had to obey the doctors decision. Bernardo Guereca's record is now 6-3. The fight was taken on two days notice for both fighters. Hopefully a rematch will be arranged between the two, agreed by promoter and by both fighters, as another fight will be another war.

Rene Armijo of JCG Boxing to fight at State Golden Gloves

JCG Boxing would like to wish Rene Armijo of the JCG Boxing Amateur team good luck at the state Golden Gloves in Fort Worth, Texas. Rene won the regional Golden Gloves in the welterweight division. Good Luck Rene & all of the regional winners!!

To "Lester Bedford" It Looks like JCG Boxing is a Shitty Little Website!

The boxing crowd in El Paso is as unique as the promoters who bring the big fights here. Top Rank, Main Events and America Presents have all brought on the best of the best. Kostya Tzu, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Panchito Bojado, Oscar De La Hoya, Eric Morales and others have had to opportunity to fight in El Paso with honor.  But to Lester, people in El Paso seem to be third rate. When JCG Boxing contacted Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions about a press pass, a very enthusiastic Reynaldo Solorzano , and Raul Jaimes (of Golden Boy Promotions) granted me permission to cover the fight for JCG Boxing. When I showed up to the weigh-ins on Wednesday I was greeted by a rude and  discourteous Lester Bedford. I could see that my name was on the list, Yet he informed me and I quote, "Who the hell are you?", stating that I had contacted De La Hoya's promotional company about my media pass, he stated, "I cant be giving out press passes to any shitty little website". Even though I informed him that I was on the list  he still did not cooperate. I was about leave when I ran into local fighters Alex Becerra and Bobby Joe Valdez. A short time later Lester approached me with my media pass claiming, "I am going to give you your pass but don't expect to sit in press row or any of that shit". Being the webmaster for JCG, I enjoyed the fights. I am glad that El Paso's fighters did good and that they won. I also want to congratulate Golden Boy Promotions for a good show.   I figured I would use my press pass to cover the fight but also to bring out what I think is a problem for people of El Paso as well as its fighters. This person described above respects nobody and does not really care for El Paso. As far as the next fights  that he supposedly brings to El Paso he can take his press pass and stick it where the sun don't shine.

Lazcano, Hernandez, Rodriguez win big!

Last night at the Don Haskins Center Oscar Del La Hoya brought his show into town with Juan Lazcano headlining the card.  The second night of the bout , and most exiting, was El Paso's very own Adan Hernandez against tough Chihuahua warrior Osvaldo Chavira. Adan Hernandez won a unanimous decision with the judges score cards 80-71, 80-71, and 79-72.Adan takes the Texas featherweight title. Also on the card was heavyweight prospect David Rodriguez who knocked out Steve Shearburn of Arizona in round one with a classic left hook. Rodriguez advances to a perfect 9-0 record. The main event put together what looked like an overmatched Danny Rios. Though Lazcano landed the more powerful punches he still could not put him away with a knockout punch. The fight was halted in the ninth round when referee Laurence Cole stopped it on a cut. Lazcano looks forward to a fight in the future with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

(02/12/2003)

Here are the results from Wednesday's weigh-ins:

Juan Lazcano 135 vs. Danny Rios 135
Kelson Pinto 139.75 vs. Richard Savage 140
David Rodriguez 238 vs. Steve Shearburn (will at weigh 7PM)
Adan Hernandez 132.5 vs. Osvaldo Chavira 129.75
Richard Odum 245.5 vs. Tony Holmes 221.5

Fights start at 6:30 PM, gates open at 5:30pm @ UTEP's Don Haskins Center. Tickets: $105.25 $44.25 $34.25 $24.25 at the UTEP ticket center; Call 915-747-5234. Tickets available at Ticketmaster have $3.00 service charge added.

Boxing Profiles Of The Southwest-Chris Cozzone

Chris Cozzone is a writer/Photographer and creator of Newmexicoboxing.com. His coverage of New Mexico, El Paso, and Juarez is the number one source for southwest boxing on the net. Chris is also a photographer for fightnews.com.

1) How did you get involved with covering boxing?
I've been working as a journalist for the past 10 years, covering topics like gang bangers, prisons, prostitutes and other street-related areas. It all sort of led into boxing, somehow. I've never been into covering sports but, for some reason, boxing was different.

2)What was the first fight you covered?
I covered a few fights at the Blue Horizon in Philly while I was living in Manhattan. From there, I got hooked. After I moved back to Albuquerque (December, 1999) I decided to continue shooting boxing.

3) What made you come up with the idea of newmexicoboxingcom?
After I moved back to NM, I realized that nobody was covering the boxing scene. Other than the occasional Johnny Tapia or Danny Romero articles that would appear in the daily newspapers, the entire boxing scene, both pro and amateur, was swept under the rug. Hell, the local papers were covering high school badminton, but ignoring some of the states best athletes in boxing.

4) How have you handled the critics of your work?
I blow it off.
I keep in mind that we got a lot of protective people here -- and a lot of petty people. On one hand, the fans are loyal, and they go out of their way to defend their fighters. On the other hand, except for a few people, they have little concept of working together to create a stronger boxing scene, or to help each other's camps produce greater fighters. There's a lot of talent here in NM and if we all worked together--camps, fighters, promoters, media--we could have the strongest boxing state in the country.
As for criticism? None of it makes much sense, which tells me that I'm doing the right thing. In other words, how can you account for an equal number of people telling me I'm paying too much attention to Fresquez fighters; then the other half telling me I'm being too rough, criticizing the Fresquez team? Or Ray Sanchez III fans telling me I'm being too hard on him, and an equal number telling me that I suck up to him? Like I said, I blow it off.
I try to keep focused, and try to remain objective. I walk a fine line--between trying to stay neutral, trying to remain supportive, and trying to keep it real.
Criticism? I invite it. I'll respond to it. I'll publish it. Bring it on . . . .

5) what is the most enjoyable part of what you do?
Giving a voice and giving attention to the fighters. I have a lot of respect for what they do and the satisfaction comes in being able to give them some recognition. It's also a good feeling to know you're helping to contribute to a growing scene.

6)What is the worst part of what you do?
Putting up with the petty comments and smack talk. I just laugh it off . . .

7) As photographer/journalist who has been your role model in life as well as your work?
I have several, most of whom have nothing to do with boxing: writers like Hubert Selby and Nelson Algren; photographers like James Nachtway, Sebastian Salgado and Eugene Richards; past teachers at UNM like Miguel Gandert, Tom Mayor and the recently deceased Hank Trewhitt; and, of course, my mother.

8) We all know why they call you "Pelon" but who gave you that name?
A prostitute in Juarez. They all started referring to me as that, as I'd visit their lairs from time to time hoping to get in a few photographs. During one fight report, I used the "El Pelon" tag and the name caught on . . . .

9)Who is your favorite fighter out of El Paso/ Juarez/ New Mexico?
That's a hard one.. I have several for different reasons. I lean toward the Mexican and Chicano fighters - no one fights like 'em, and with so much heart; guys like Ranchero Ramirez, Kirino Garcia from Juarez; Diablo, Conan, & Gallito out of El Paso. I've also got my eye on Mexico's Daniel Ponce De Leon - he's a monster and--you heard it here first--will be a world champion in a year or so.
As for New Mexico? You can't beat Johnny Tapia. I also think Romero can still bounce back. It's always fun to watch a Tommy Aragon or Tony Valdez -- these guys just love to fight. Vernon Payne has a ton of natural talent and if he can stay focused and fight often, he can do something. Archuleta, too, if he can fight with a bit more gusto. I give Joe Brady a lot of hell but he's never dull in a fight. Despite their losses, I also say keep an eye on Joaquin Zamora, Shawn Gallegos and Ray Sanchez III. Also: Naz Rojas is turning his career around; and unbeaten prospects Barela, Martinez, Brian Romero and Lee Montoya can do something. I also like some of the lesser known fighters who, win or lose, are always entertaining: guys like Ramon "Monstruo" Perez from Juarez, and our top opponent Juan Aranday.

10)Who is your favorite fighter of all time?
Tough one . . . No single fighter.
I like the old Italian dudes: Marciano, Graziano, Basilio, LaMotta . . . Jack Johnson and Dempsey from the old days . . . Ali & Frazier, of course . . . And currently? the Mexicans are the ones making the sport: Barrera, Morales, Marquez, Mayorga, Ricardo Lopez before he retired, etc.

JCG Boxing webmaster replies to unsatisfied reader

JCG Boxing received a letter  from an unsatisfied reader that wrote:

I want to express my opinion tours your website, I'm
an El Paso native and huge boxing fan and sadly to say
I'm very disappointed with your website. If you're
going to start something like this, you better be
willing to commit your self to this task. I had the
chance to view your first website and thought it was
trash. If your intention is to advertise El Paso and
it's fighters, you are doing a bad job. You need to
update your website at least every week, give us
something to read about or try to get the readers
attention. If you don't have time to do this why even
bother starting it.

Arturo Magallanez

In response to your ridiculous letter jcgboxing.com would like to reply that this website is not trying to advertise El Paso or El Paso's fighters. El Paso treats its fighters like you treat our website. In case you have not noticed all of our professional fighters have to fight in New Mexico because of corrupt promoters in Texas. New Mexico has been our home for the last three years. If you didn't know already, our site is an informative website for the JCG Boxing Team only. If an El Paso fighter is not on our team he is not on our site, plain and simple. You also have the right not to view our website, which we invite you to do. Sometimes there is no new news from our team and that is why our site remains unchanged for lengths at a time. It is a shame that when someone critics the jcgboxing.com website the person has to be from El Paso. Thank you for your input Arturo, we will make sure and place it where we placed your e-mail.....in the trash!
